NEW BOOK – MURDER & MAYHEM IN HERKIMER COUNTY
Herkimer County is a region steeped in history that dates back to the settlement of the wilderness of the Mohawk Valley when the Palatine German settlers came to live along the Mohawk River in 1723. The Erie Canal opened up the West and travelers streamed through the Valley and communities grew. The County became notable for its agricultural pursuits and industries, and as these stories will attest, high profile murder cases. Roxalana Druse murdered her abusive husband and became the last woman to be hanged in New York State in 1887. Chester Gillette and Grace Brown were from Cortland, NY, but with their stop on a trip together at Big Moose Lake in northern Herkimer County, they became one of the most famous murder cases in the country in 1906. For the first time psychological tests of intelligence were admitted into court leading to a verdict of acquittal based on criminal imbecility for 16 year old jean Gianini who murdered his schoolteacher Lida Beecher in the village of Poland in 1914. These and more of the most fascinating historical murder cases in Herkimer County will be revealed in these pages.
