The book is based on a true story of a perilous search and rescue mission of a downed World War II cargo plane over the Greenland ice cap that has a local connection. Sgt. Paul James Spina (1916-1978), a Frankfort native, enlisted in the Air Force in March 1942. On Nov. 9, he and a six-man crew of the Air Transport Command crashed on the Greenland Ice Cap while searching for a missing plane. They were able to live in makeshift quarters made from the tail of the broken fuselage and food and supplies were dropped by parachute, along with letters from home. Attempts for a rescue were made, but failed, until April 1943. Their story, surviving the brutal winter in the Arctic wilderness, and their rescue, is told by best selling author Mitchell Zuckoff, a professor of journalism at Boston University.
