This book features the story and original diary of Private William J. McLean, Co. C., 34th New York Infantry, better known as the Herkimer County Regiment. The author purchased the diary in 1998 and began a research and writing odyssey which culminated with the publication of this work. William McLean was born in 1840 at or near Philadelphia, Pa. His father, John McLean, emigrated from Scotland some years before William’s birth. The book notes that the McLean family was living in Herkimer County in 1856 and William was attending Fairfield Academy where he enlisted from 2 years later in the Civil War.
